Arizona Gopher Control & Removal

Arizona Gopher Control & Removal

You water and care for your yard, then one morning there’s a fresh pile of dirt in the lawn and your new citrus tree is wilting. Gophers are one of the Valley’s most frustrating yard pests. Canopy Pest Control has been family-owned and serving the East Valley since 2014, and gopher removal and elimination is a big part of what we do. We’ll help you protect your lawn and landscaping.

Meet the Botta’s Pocket Gopher

The gopher you’re most likely dealing with is the Botta’s pocket gopher, also called the Valley pocket gopher. It’s a stocky, burrowing rodent with strong front claws and fur-lined cheek pouches (“pockets”) for carrying food. Gophers live almost entirely underground, so most homeowners never see one, only the damage.

Signs You Have Gophers

Gophers leave clues long before you spot the animal itself. Watch for:

  • Crescent- or fan-shaped dirt mounds. Fresh soil pushed up in a half-moon shape, often in lawns, garden beds, and along walls
  • Plugged holes. A small circle of packed soil at the edge of a mound, where the gopher sealed its tunnel
  • Dying plants and roots. Plants that wilt or die suddenly, or that pull right out of the ground because the roots have been eaten
  • Damaged drip irrigation. Chewed drip lines, unexplained leaks, soggy spots, or sudden drops in water pressure

Why Gophers Stay Active Year-Round in the Valley

Gophers don’t hibernate. Native desert soil can be hard and dry, but regular watering keeps yard soil soft and easy to dig, and lawns, gardens, and trees supply a steady stream of roots. That’s why gophers often turn up in green yards in Gilbert, Queen Creek, and San Tan Valley, which border former farmland, and on larger lots in Mesa and Gold Canyon. In a watered yard, gophers can be active any month.

What Gophers Damage

Common targets include:

  • Lawns: mounds smother grass, and tunnels leave uneven, lumpy turf
  • Vegetable and flower gardens: roots, bulbs, and whole plants disappear from below
  • Citrus and young trees: gophers chew on roots, which can weaken or kill young trees and stress established ones
  • Irrigation systems: drip lines and other buried irrigation tubing can be chewed through, wasting water and starving plants
